William Dean Howells
William Dean Howells, is one of America’s most respected literary minds, author of over 100 books and novels, and Mark Twain’s close friend and editor. Howells was editor of the Atlantic Monthly in the 1870s when he discovered Twain and began to publish his early work. Over the years, he has served as Twain’s constant advocate and keenest critic.

Jeff Bridges would be great but you could change it up and cast Jason Alexander……
I think Brian Dennehy would be a perfect fit for this role. He resembles him quite nicely and has an authoritarian air about him. Projecting intelligence and class………. he could easily portray a man of such caliber.
I think Anthony Hopkins should play William Dean Howells
Ted Levine (Capt. Stottlemeyer from “Monk”)
Terry O’Quinn
John Goodman. It needs to be John Goodman.
Anthony Hopkins could be perfect
How about Wilford Brimley?
I vote for Sam Neill
Richard Dreyfus would be a good choice.
Brian Dennehy would be great for this role.
Robert Redford
Stacy Keach
Ed Asner or Wilford Brimley
Armin Mueller-Stahl
With over forty years of work studying, categorizing, and depicting the life and times of Mark Twain, I feel I know William Dean Howells as well as any seasoned professional actor might know him today. I have been acting on stage in Equity productions since 1965, and continue to act, as well as to publish a library of Mark Twain Audiobooks. All of this information might well work against my chances of being cast as the gentleman Mark Twain would awaken at Stormfield by calling “Howwweeeellllllls!!” in the hall, but I figured what the hell, you’d find out I’m a Mark Twain presenter sooner or later, so… If I had an email address, I’d be happy to send you a complimentary copy of my latest Mark Twain audiobook, which mentions Howells, in fact: The Death Of Jean. I’m putting together the cover and notes at this writing. You can see my library (and listen to samples) at richardhenzel.com/marktwain Thanks for the chance to be a part of this interesting and important work.
Gene Hackman… too bad he’s retired.
My 2 choices are Colm Feore or Christopher Plummer
Robert Duval
Wilford Brimley, not only does he resemble Mr. Howells, he seems to have the personal character of someone who would have been close to Twain.
Robert De Niro because Val respects Him
Wilford Brimley & Brian Dennehy came to mind first but
Anthony Hopkins is an excellent choice.
Brian Dennehy
Richard Dreyfuss
Kurt Russell
Paul Dooley
I’m only willing to mention my actual acting history to anyone who is serious enough to give an audition. My personal website is under construction. I’ve been asked by people such as Shelley Winters who made me look her in her eyes and promise I would go into acting one day also wanted to be my teacher. Robert Goulet offered a position as his understudy after meeting with him several times and I’ve had offers from other very well known directors. Until now I wasn’t able to be in actual major motion films however the type of acting I’ve done in the past before going back to college to study media and computer science I’ve also helped the White House, at 50 years old now I can fianlly commit what it takes to be successful. I’ve decided to keep my promises and give acting a go and have prepared for many years, for that one next big break if it ever comes my way again. I see at least three parts I would be great to audition for in this movie if willing to give me a chance I can now honestly work and commit 100% and see this as a great start in this form of acting as a performing artist.
I second Ted Levine. A good, yeoman actor.
1st choice: Robert Duval
2nd choice: Robert Redford
3rd choice: Kurt Russell
Robert Duvall is a wonderful choice to be included in this film to play one of the characters. I hope that happens.
I think Wilford Brimley also … or Brian Dennehy. Cast Robert Duvall SOMEWHERE!
Armin Mueller-Stahl
How about Rip Torn? Though he’s had a public faux pas or 2, he’s still a pretty good actor and would appreciate the role.
Kevin Cosner ….Not too old….Not too young….would be interesting pairing with Val Kilmer….
Gene Hackman
Judging on looks, perhaps Stacy Keach.
Fred Thompson
Brian Doyle-Murray.
Barry Corbin looks like Howells and is a great actor.
I agree with the Ted Levine or William Bromley or Fred Thompson but many of the above ideals r all really good.
Maybe even John Travolta or Tom Cruse.
Look at the photo, thin the man out a little, there you have it: Christopher Plummer.
Anthony Hopkins
Alfred Schmitz III (Actor/Singer)
Current location: NYC
Richard Dreyfuss could easily portray William Dean Howells.

oliver stone deffently even tho hes a director he would be a sweet choice and it would be cool to see the 2 together
1st choice: William Hurt
2nd choice: Armin Mueller-Stahl
Both, as you know, are stellar and seasoned actors.
William Hurt is my first choice as he has a mesmerizing presence.
