Jean Clemens
Jean Clemens, is the third and youngest of Twain’s three daughters and has suffered from epilepsy since she was fifteen. After losing his favorite daughter, Susie, to meningitis, Twain has spared no expense seeking a cure for Jean. She has spent many years in a private sanatorium and has only recently returned home in time for Christmas. We see in Jean the joy and madness of her father, but inside a frail female body.

Maggie Gyllenhaal
Ellen Page
Shiri Appleby
I see somebody suggested Keira Knightly for MBE, but she would be more suitable for Jean or one of hte other younger roles
Charlotte Gainsbourg
Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Mary-Louise Parker – its the Mary team!
Zooey Deschanel
What about Lisa Kudrow?
Amy Adams would be perfect.
oddly enough there is a resemblence to cameron diaz.with the dark hair ya that would work. and cameron could pull it off it might get her into the oscars.
How about Winona Ryder?
I’ve read over the character description and though this seems like a role that may not have a lot of face time, I still might suggest Sandra Bullock based on the southern accent, her ability to play to play “the joy and madness of her father, but inside a frail female body.”
Just a thought.
Audrey Tauto has the strength of character and personal comedic temperment of Sam Clemens, within a “frail” exterior.
Lindsy Lohan
Laura Flynn Boyle
Holly Hunter
Julie Hagerty, Courteney Cox-Arquette or Alyson Hannigan
Anne Hathaway? She’s such a talented actor, she might be skilled enough to pull off the character’s complexity.
Keira Knightley would be an excellent choice.
complete unknown, but very aware of Christian Science, and has a grandson with special needs
Sandra Bullock exhibits great joy and, I think, is an actress that can switch from being a strong character (as she has played many times) to a frail bodied person with strong inner vibes.
Winona Ryder
Dakota Fanning would be superb as Jean Twain.
Winona Ryder
Julia Roberts would be wonderful for this role.
Natalie Portman
From the description, I think the character is older that most of the actresses mentioned already. Ally Sheedy has my vote
Rachel McAdams is very good, i also like Anne Hathaway
natalie Portman
My vote is for Darcy Champagne. An actress in NYC with the troupe, ‘Working Man’s Clothes’, the title from Emerson I believe. She can play anything and she is a native New Englander.
I think Liv Tyler would be perfect for this role.
Julia Ormond or Anne Hathaway (the latter based on her total transformation from her previous “type casting” in Rachel Getting Married)
Is Mary Steenburgen (sp?) too old?
Renee Zellweger
Winona Ryder
I would recommend Georgia Reed for the role of Jean Clemmens http://www.facebook.com/ReedGeorgia
Hallie Foote would be great
Hallie Foote
winnona ryder would be excellent for this role.
I would think someone like Hilary Swank. She’s such a good actress. It looks like this person is older, but Hilary could pull it off. Second choice, Natalie Portman as stated above.
How about Val’ daughter? I’ll just bet she can act, plus, it wouldn’t be much of a stretch because she could actually play his daughter in the film.
I’m rooting for her!
Naomi watts…she is an amazing actress and she can look frail..perhaps too pretty though
Someone mentioned Amy Adams and I agree!
Jean Clemens was 29 years old when she passed away. She must have looked frail.
Bryce Howard was very frail looking in the movie The Village, where she played a young, blind girl.
Bryce Howard is my suggestion.
Juliette Lewis would be brilliant for the role.
I see Claire Danes.
My Jean Clemens readings would go to :
Eva Green,
Maggie Gyllenhaal, and
Bryce Dallas Howard
Helen Hunt
Winona Ryder
Helena Bonham Carter would be great in this role she does unbalanced and fragile very well
